About Helper Hounds: The Program
Helper Hounds was inspired by another program, called Trained and Maintained Service Dogs Inc., which was run by the late Susan Grill.
Susan raised dogs for those who needed them, but also would help people who wanted to train their own dog, or "Owner Trainers", in training their own dogs. Susan Grill was my mentor, and taught me most of what I know about training service dogs, and when she passed away June 2019, I vowed to keep with her goals to help as many people who need it as possible. Thus, Helper Hounds was born. The Mission Statement of Helper Hounds is to take well-bred, well-raised, well-socialized hounds and put them into the hands of recipients who need them, help those who have a dog already to be the most successful they can be, and do whatever is possible to assist as many people as possible to have a successful canine helper.
In order to be successful, recipients have to be dedicated to their dog and the program. This is part of the reason why, although we would love to give dogs to those who need them for free, we have to ask for donations towards the dogs' care, breeding, and the continuation of the program in general.
We are not a non-profit as of the current time, but will be working towards full non-profit status. Until we get non-profit status, donations will not be considered tax deductible, but are very much appreciated! We also take donations like gift cards, kibble, toys, leashes, and other items that are from the brands we listed below. If you'd like to donate items, please email or otherwise contact the program to ask what we need, that way we don't get more than what we need of some things and are short of other things.
